Back Porch Soap Co. was founded in 1998 by organic beauty and skincare formulator, Marla Bosworth. She is a Colorado resident who is inspired daily by life in and around Colorado and anywhere her travels take her. For as long as she can remember, she has been inspired by nature to create beautiful things. As a young girl, she grew up in central Illinois and later moved to Jackson Hole, Wyoming.
Marla is a soap and cosmetic formulator who teaches natural and organic skincare workshops throughout the U.S. She has been making soap, natural perfumes, blending essential oils and formulating cosmetics for 20 years.
Understanding retail sales and products at an early age (she began working in retail at the age of 16), Marla developed an eye for how to differentiate consumer products and began uncovering the secrets to successful selling techniques – from trendy gift shop boutiques to ski apparel.
In addition to selling fresh skincare products in Colorado, Marla is a natural skincare consultant and educator. She consults with beauty and cosmetic companies. As a consultant she researches and designs personal care products. In addition, her company provides private label to clients as well as corporate branded gifts and holiday corporate gifts.
Marla's love of retail prompted her to open her store, named Back Porch Soap Co., in the Boston area. She also manufactures product in-store and began teaching cosmetic formulation classes in 2003. In May 2013, after 25 years as a Massachusetts resident, she moved back to Jackson Hole, Wyoming to open her flagship store and training center for soapmaking classes, entrepreneurship workshops and retreats on how to make soap and how to start a bath and body business.
Marla's credentials include a B.A. in English/Journalism from the University of New Hampshire in 1987. Marla shares with students her extensive background in product and business marketing, market research, social media and manufacturer consulting. As a Market Research Analyst for the leading market research company now known as Forrester Research, she guided product development with such Fortune 500 companies such as Hewlett-Packard, Canon, Xerox and IBM.
Marla has more than 30 years of expertise in Retail Sales, Business Development, Strategic Planning, Market Research, Product Development and Marketing.
Marla teaches business and cosmetic formulation classes near her home in Boulder, CO, New York City as well as online seminars and webinars. She has been featured as a guest lecturer at Wellesley College (Wellesley, MA) and the New York Botanical Garden. She also teaches entrepreneurial and beauty seminars at national conferences. She is a published author, having written several self-published books as well as articles for The Saponifier Magazine. In addition, she has been a guest speaker at the Handcrafted Soapmakers Guild Conference in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014. You can find her workshops throughout the United States.
